We are currently looking for an apprentice to join our Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship Scheme, supporting our teams within Drug Development Solutions. This is a training contract, where you will undertake placements in our Sample Management and Science Support Teams at our site in Fordham, Cambridgeshire.

Our Bioanalysis Department works together with pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical companies in support of pre-clinical and clinical trials for a wide variety of clients and therapeutic areas. We use innovative analytical methodology and the expertise of our analytical scientists to speed up the discovery of new medicines. We operate a well-equipped laboratory compliant with GLP and GCP, and offer the opportunity to work with state of the art analytical instrumentation.

Your Placements

Sample Management Team

Within the Sample Management Team you will be assisting with the delivery of a high standard service within a fast-paced environment, with responsibilities including batching up study samples for analytical runs and tracking samples in our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).  A key aspect of the role is the ability to pay close attention to detail, whilst handling biological samples, ensuring sample integrity is maintained throughout the lifetime of the sample.  You will be working on regulated studies to the appropriate Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) or Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards in accordance with SOP’s and producing good quality documentation.

Science Support Team

The Lab Support team is responsible for delivering a range of services to multiple laboratories on site at Fordham, including those working to GCP, GLP and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulations. Key activities are regular maintenance of bench top lab equipment, reagent preparation, glass washing and pipette checks which must be performed in accordance with SOP’s and recorded on our in-house LIMS. A flexible approach, excellent attention to detail and the ability to problem solve a range of challenges are essential skills to be able to react to the changing priorities faced by our regulated laboratories.

Your Training

For one day a week, you will attend West Suffolk College (in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk) to attend taught training sessions (excluding half terms and holidays), you will be supported throughout your apprenticeship by your buddy, line manager and team and a dedicated programme tutor from West Suffolk College.

What will you achieve?

On completion of the apprenticeship, you will have achieved:

  • Full Laboratory Technician Level 3 Standard
  • Level 3 Laboratory Skills Certificate recognised by the Royal Society of Chemistry
  • Skills for Success – a module designed by West Suffolk College to ensure you have all the personal skills and behaviours to succeed in the workplace.

Entry Requirements

The ideal candidate will have 5 GCSE’s including Maths and English (Grade C or above or 4/5), for this apprenticeship, you need to have an A Level in Science or a Level 3 equivalent. Apprentices without English and Maths at Level 2 must achieve these prior to taking their End Point Assessment.

They will also be a good team player, keen to learn, willing to help others, and be curious and have a genuine desire to develop a career in science.
