Senior Pharmaceutical Scientist - Materials Science

We are currently recruiting for an enthusiastic Materials Senior Scientist to join our Analytical Materials Science team at the Sandwich site in Kent, UK.

The AMS team supports the development and manufacture of new and existing medicines working for a wide range of customers, ranging from universities to large pharmaceutical companies. The team consists of a dozen members of staff and specialises in materials science, quantitation and identification of impurities.

You will support the overall department growth and the continuing development of its Solid Form Screening and Selection Centre of Excellence (CoE) in accordance to divisional business plan. The successful candidate would be responsible for supporting the life cycle of a range of projects and the direct communication of progress to external stakeholders, as well as potential visits to clients.

Key responsibilities:

  • You will make use of instrumentation allowing characterization of critical physical properties, such as laser diffraction tools, gas adsorption and iGC surface energy analysis and indeed microscopy. This will include development and validation of methodologies to be used in GMP environment
  • Perform testing on pharmaceutical samples throughout pharmaceutical program lifecycle, using tools Powder X-Ray Diffraction (PXRD), Thermal analyses, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), or sorption techniques
  • Act as an integral part of a specialised team, supporting the assessment of client needs, troubleshooting, and identify the most appropriate analytical tools for analytical activities and the logistics for delivery
  • Work closely with other materials science experts to scope work and set up proposals/protocols in the field of solid form screening and characterisation, interact directly with our clients and establish work protocols which can be used to support regulatory documentation (e.g. new drug applications
  • Perform salt and polymorph screening exercises.  Interpretation of data package to provide recommendation of the solid form selection
  • Work with vendors to ensure the suitable use and maintenance of instrumentation
  • Carry out with minimal guidance all aspects of practical work necessary to provide quality results for customers including project review activities
  • Maintain focus on the timely delivery of activities to agreed project and customer milestones. Plans and reviews work schedules to meet deadlines

Education, experience and technical skills:

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in relevant scientific discipline associated with pharmaceutical sciences
  • Science graduate with keen interest in the area of materials science. Knowledge and experience of the phramaceutical lifecycle
  • Experience of running solid form screening
  • Knowledge of early formulation development
  • cGMP experience
  • Competent use of critical instrumentation
